General aims and themes of the Track A Helsinki-Barcelona
The Helsinki-Barcelona track of the ECMCT aims to help the student achieve a certain artistic and technical independence in the areas of studio composition and musical performance using various technologies and software. The Helsinki semester will emphasise basic training and fundamental concepts, and in Barcelona the student will deepen his/her understanding, complete a supervised artistic project and engage in a concert performance.

General Presentation
Focus: Sound Synthesis and Processing in the Studio and in Musical Performance
The Helsinki semester will give a short, intensive introduction to basic tools and techniques of musical composition and sound design with technology (electroacoustic composition, composition with instruments and technology, computer-aided composition). The student will complete preliminary exercises in the studio independently, but with some guidance from the staff.
The semester will have special features with regard to themes and software: on the one hand tools sound synthesis, processing and control in the studio, and on the other hand instrument design for improvisation and live performance, with some attention paid to the question of user interfaces. Introductions to low-cost audio synthesis and processing software will also be featured.
